Kinderstern print, in Albert Kriemler's Akris Spring/Summer 2021 Collection, inspired by Imi Knoebel's social sculpture "Kinderstern", created in 1989.

“I wouldn’t say anything voluntarily anyway!” One of the leading German artists, Imi Knoebel, is known for his contributions to and shaping of 20th century Minimalist abstract art. His wide-ranging and rigorous oeuvre incorporates drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, projections and installation. Born as Klaus Wolf Knoebel in Dessau in 1940 he studied under the tutelage of Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and was assigned, together with his friend and fellow artist Imi Giese, its legendary “Raum 19”.

The most significant honor bestowed on him to date, is the major commission of nine large stained-glass windows for the Notre-Dame cathedral in Reims for which he was awarded with the Officier des Arts et des Lettres in recognition of his Franco-German reconciliation work in 2016.

His artworks can be found in prominent public collections including MoMA (New York); The Broad (Los Angeles); the Musée National d’Art Moderne and Centre Pompidou (Paris).

Imi Knoebel lives and works in Düsseldorf.
